Earlier in December we had the chance to visit the Nissan heritage fleet and do some filming on the Nissan Newbird with Jonny Smith for his late brake show YouTube channel.

It was a great day and we also got to drive the fantastic micro race car that has a V6 from a 350Z in the rear of it – wild and noise – wonder what it would be like with an electric motor turned up to 11 instead?????

Q: Why does it cost so much?

A: A large part of the conversion budget is parts. Used EV parts prices are rising as there is more demand form a limited supply. We also need to use new specialist control systems and as these are manufactured in small volumes they are relatively expensive. Along with this each conversion is unique and requires a lot of custom fabrication meaning they take a lot of man hours to complete.

The average cost for a LEAF based conversion is £30,000 plus VAT

Q: How long does a conversion take?

A: Approximately 16 weeks – this assumes we do not need to carry out any work to the vehicle outside of the conversion.

Q: What range will the vehicle do once converted?

A: This has a lot of valuable in it. Firstly it depends on your budget – the greater the range means the larger the capacity of

We have been working on this car for a little while – planning the conversion and gathering the parts.

Its now time to get everything fitted to the car and then it will be go back to the restorers for them to paint and finish before coming back to us for wiring and commissioning.

We will bring you more updates along the way.

Finally we can tell you what we have been up to over the past 3 months – we have been having a ball working with Nissan UK to create the NEWBIRD – an EV conversion of a 1989 Nissan Bluebird with Nissan LEAF components.

We will be bringing you lots of detail over the next few days but to begin with here is the Nissan press release –

Nissan ‘Newbird’: In Detail

The Bluebird was extensively modified to integrate the LEAF’s electric drivetrain. The original petrol combustion engine and gearbox were removed and a LEAF motor, inverter and 40kWh battery pack installed, with the battery modules split between the engine bay and boot for optimised weight distribution.

Updates and modifications were made to the power steering, braking and heating systems to enable them to be electrically powered. A custom suspension was also installed to support the additional weight from the battery packs.
