1978 Datsun Cherry 100A FII EV Conversion – the CherrE

Completed Conversion - Collaboration with NA College Washington

Job Description

In May Late May 2021 we were contacted by NA College in Washington, Tyne & Wear with a request to help a team of their apprentices (they train the Nissan factory apprentices) convert a 1978 Datsun Cherry to Electric. They only had 4 weeks to do it so we had to drop everything and focus on their project.

With their close relationship with Nissan they already had a Nissan Leaf motor, inverter, transmission and batteries. The challenge was to get all of these parts fitted and working before June 30th when the Prime Minister was due to visit the Nissan factory to announce Nissans EV36Zero project. More details are available via the college’s website here

We worked with them to specify and order the other components required then plan out the mechanical installation. We then spent time onsite leading the wiring and commissioning of the car, finishing it hours before the deadline. Although it cant bee seen in the pictures the boot area had a clear perspex cover added to it to ensure no one could touch the high voltage components. The plan is to work with the college to finish off the project in the near future.
